BRINGING YOUR HOLIDAY IDEAS TO LIFE!

Mountain view of Verbier

Summer in the Swiss resort of Verbier

By Juliette Goodman

My return to the Alpine town of Verbier in the summer was filled with anticipation - I had last waved goodbye after living and working here during the winter seasons of 2017 and 2018. This time around, I would be swapping my skis and the chalet girl lifestyle for a wholesome summer break, accompanied by my mum (also a former ‘seasonnaire’ way back in the 1980s). We would be enjoying a healthy dose of mountain e-biking, foraging, exploring, wine and raclette – the perfect tonic to months of gloomy London lockdown.

In a prime location, just off the Place Centrale, is the Hotel Bristol, which was to be our base for the trip. The perfect spot for accessing both first lifts and last pints, the Hotel Bristol offers its guests a piece of the action in Verbier, with a cosy Alpine charm that made it just as inviting to retreat to.

We set off on our first morning for a short hike up to the Savoleyres cable car, which zipped over fields of green to the neighbouring resort of La Tzoumas. A stay of one night or more in Verbier entitles you to a free Verbier Infinite Playground (VIP) Lift Pass +, as well as giving you access to 50 activities for free or at a discounted rate - so it really couldn’t be easier to get out and explore.

Our day in La Tzoumas was to be spent gourmet foraging in the lush hills surrounding the lifts for wild plants – a perfect mother and daughter activity. Our efforts to scour for sources of nourishment amongst the endless carpets of green were ably guided by our knowledgeable Mountain Leader, with the wonderful and very appropriate name of Cherries

We basked in the sunshine, piling our loot from the morning high onto wooden picnic tables, whilst Cherries’ know-how with a makeshift kitchen and portable stove quickly transformed the findings into a veritable feast. It was pure pleasure to be chowing down on stewed nettles, wild spinach and fresh daisies on toast, followed by wild rhubarb compote, and juicy red berries; we were delighted with the fruits of our labour.

Uncovering this bounty from beneath the tracks that I had so often skied over, offered an insight into the slow and meandering pace of summer life in Verbier. This was a long way from my memories of Carlsberg-fuelled slope-side après parties, with dancing on the tables and high-volume soundtracks. The soft clang of bells from the nearby Hérens cows offered a peaceful soundtrack to our picnic, and was certainly a more appropriate way to spend time with my mother!

Our next stop was the annual Verbier E-Bike festival in the Le Châble valley. We followed a not-so-gruelling five-part itinerary that celebrated the local gastronomy and culture of the Val de Bagnes, rewarding every 30 minutes or so of soft pedalling with a glorious stop-off for fresh croissants, cheese fondue, red wine, hot sourdough and charcuterie platters. This kind of cycling we could get thoroughly on board with, and the power-assistance of our E-bikes meant mother and daughter could travel at the same pace, covering some 26.5km of hilly mountain terrain with blissful ease.

We were struck by the wonderful sense of community in Le Châble, and the impact of Covid on their tightly knit circles. There was a sense of optimism and determination as they looked ahead to the winter season – ‘we’re here in the world’s greatest outdoor playground’ the locals told us, ‘where else could you want to be?’ And we agreed entirely. The fresh Swiss air, breath-taking postcard views and gentle way of life were all completely intoxicating – a perfect oasis of mountain bliss.

The final pit-stop was a visit to the PALP music festival – an annual week of musical events staged against dramatically beautifully backdrops, and with the wonderfully named ‘Rocklette’ stand serving up, of course, hearty plates of oozy Swiss cheese that promised to keep party-goers dancing into the small hours. ‘One more song’ at PALP and it was time to board our coach and start the descent back down to reality. Upon our arrival back to drizzly Heathrow, we took comfort in knowing that our idyllic mountain bubble was just a short plane ride away – a gastronomic delight and the perfect destination for all ages.
